McHenry Statement on Passage of Democrats’ Reckless Tax and Spending Package

Washington, Nov 19 -

Today, the top Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, Patrick McHenry (NC-10), released the following statement after voting against Democrats’ reckless tax and spending package:

“Today, House Democrats passed a reckless tax and spending bill that will drive up the cost of living for the American people and leave us further in debt,” said Republican Leader McHenry. “This legislation will have stark consequences for people here in North Carolina. It raises taxes on everyday necessities like the gas that fuels our cars and heats our homes. While North Carolinians will be stuck paying more, this bill creates new tax breaks and subsidies that mostly benefit people in big cities in blue states. This bill will also perpetuate our nation’s labor shortage by continuing welfare benefits without work requirements and imposes billions of dollars in taxes on the main street businesses that create jobs in our communities. Further, it weaponizes the IRS against the American people—mandating tens of thousands of new audits—allowing them to invade the privacy of families and small businesses.

“Additionally, the housing provisions in Democrats’ reckless bill will further drive up the cost of housing and will pump billions in taxpayer funding into failed programs, with no reforms to improve their effectiveness. Despite Democrats’ claims, there’s nothing ‘transformative’ about this bill, except that it will make things worse for Americans filling up their tank, buying groceries, or saving to purchase a home for their family.

“While there seems to be no end to the list of terrible provisions included in this $1.75 trillion dollar bill, one thing is clear: House Democrats are advancing their progressive agenda at the expense of the American people.”
